You know you have a collapsed vein when you can’t draw blood from it or when the vein “disappears.” Thrombosis is the formation of an obstruction of a blood vessel by
a blood clot. Don’t use veins that do not bend when pushed as they may have blood clots that can break off and lodge in the lungs or other parts of the body and cause serious damage. You can avoid vein collapse by always rotating and alternating your injection sites and by injecting in the direction of the body’s blood flow (toward the heart). Using the same injection site over and over without letting the vein heal is one of the surest ways to cause vein collapse. Also, insert your needle at a 15 to 45 degree angle with the bevel of the needle facing upwards.

In the Phase II MagnetisMM-3 study, 48.0% experienced Grade 3/4 neutropenia [32]. With teclistamab, 64.2% experienced Grade 3/4 neutropenia in Phase I/II MajesTEC-1 iv drug use study. In this study, one patient had a BsAb dose reduction due to recurrent neutropenia, and 91 (55.1% patients) received treatment with G-CSF [24].

Neutropenia-related infections may be potentially life-threatening, resulting in treatment delays or dose modification, which in turn can reduce treatment efficacy [42]. Neutropenia can be treated by using recombinant granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) [43]. Appropriate use of G-CSF prophylaxis is important to reduce the risk of infection in MM patients [43].

It is important to follow proper sterilization procedures when utilizing needles and syringes to inject drugs since inaccurate sanitation practices may increase the risk of bacterial infections. It’s called “track marks” when needle addiction causes chronic vascular scarring, as well. Although consistently higher seroprevalence rates have been found among minority IV drug users, more complete interpretations of the data raise questions about factors that may differentially predispose minorities to HIV infection. In some studies (e.g., Marmor et al., 1987b), racial and ethnic differences do not retain statistical significance after controlling for drug use and needle-sharing. However, in the study of IV drug users from San Francisco, both blacks and Latinos were found to have a greater prevalence of HIV infection than whites, a finding that persisted after adjusting for reported needle-sharing (Chaisson et al., 1987b).

Intravenous drug use can introduce numerous toxins and pathogens into a person’s veins and body at large, which pave the way for infection. Staphyloccus aureus, or MRSA as it’s better known to most of us, is the bacteria most frequently responsible for IV drug infections. In fact, we recommend that you not touch the items inside of the kit for any reason unless you absolutely have to.

A study by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) indicates that up to sixty per cent of cases of hepatitis C in the United States may be brought on by intravenous drug use. Choosing to seek addiction treatment for substance use disorder is the first step towards recovery. Safe injection sites offer an environment where people can inject illegal drugs under the supervision of trained staff.

Blood Tests: What You Need to Know

Cellulitis, characterized by redness, swelling, and tenderness of the skin, is a common complication that arises from IV drug use. HIV, which weakens the immune system, and hepatitis, which causes inflammation of the liver, can have severe health consequences. Prophylaxis should be maintained whilst the patient is still receiving treatment for MM, and thereafter at the discretion of the individual physician. Monitoring while using these prophylactic treatments is not recommended by the expert panel (level IIB). The use of PCR-based viral panels is recommended to diagnose active viral infections and reactivations (level IIC). Noting that all MM patients receiving BsAbs warrant a high degree of vigilance for infection risk and occurrence, the panel categorized risk factors, from the BsAb literature reviewed, by patient-, disease-, and treatment-related factors (Fig. 1).

This can lead to intravenous injection—more commonly referred to as IV drug use. Intravenous drug use is related to hepatitis A primarily through the sharing of contaminated injection equipment, such as needles and syringes. In the United States, there has been a similar complementarity between programs that provide the means for safer injection and drug treatment programs. As noted earlier, the first ex-addict outreach program in New Jersey evolved from one that taught sterilization methods into one with expanded treatment capacity (Jackson and Rotkiewicz, 1987; Jackson and Baxter, 1988). The outreach programs in New York and San Francisco that distribute bleach have had to develop referral-to-treatment programs and street counseling components to keep up with the demand for these services (Des Jarlais, 1987b).

However, estimates of the total number of individuals at risk of HIV infection from injecting illicit drugs are subject to considerable error; this problem is treated in detail in the last section of this chapter. Hepatitis C can either be chronic but asymptomatic (without symptoms, which means you barely even notice you have it), or chronic-active, which means disease will develop over a long period of time–several years or perhaps even decades. Up to a quarter of people who become infected with HCV will clear the virus on their own and not develop chronic hepatitis C.

In contrast, research has shown that users adjust their consumption to such external factors as price and availability (Waldorf, 1970; Hanson et al., 1985). This ability to adapt to various social and market forces also sustains the belief among many users that they are not addicts but merely visitors to the heroin scene who are still in control of their lives (Fields and Walters, 1985). Professional help, such as counseling or therapy, can provide individuals with the resources they need to stay away from IV drugs and make healthy choices. Additionally, family and friends can provide support and accountability for an individual’s recovery. The best way to avoid HIV and AIDS is to practice safe sex and avoid medical equipment and needles that have been used before.
